LB’S BOOKSTORE

Sometimes I wind up with more copies of a book than I require. (Other times I come up short, and have to hunt around and pay premium prices for copies of my own works. I hate it when that happens. . .)

I have a fairly good supply of most of the titles listed here, except as noted, and will fill orders as long as they last. Because I don’t have a finger on the pulse of the antiquarian book market, I’ll leave it to you to determine whether the prices represent a genuine steal or, uh, highway robbery.

All books will be autographed. No personal inscriptions, though, and no autographs on the audio books. This section will be updated frequently, with books delisted as they sell out and others added as they come available.

CLEVELAND IN MY DREAMS DVD

LB's short story, Cleveland in My Dreams (found in Enough Rope) brought to life by Mark Sullivan, whose sister Olive Sullivan adapted it for the screen. The resulting 29-minute film won the prize as Best Comedy Film at the 2005 Route 66 Film Festival, and has garnered honors at other festivals as well. In addition to the film, the DVD includes filmmakers' commentary, production stills, trailers, and more. Signed by LB on the cover.

BREAK WRITER'S BLOCK NOW!

I normally offer only my own work here, but I've made an exception for one of the most useful books ever written for writers. Jerrold Mundis's 90-page hardcover book, out of print since its 1991 publication, offers a system for ending writer's block that, remarkably enough, actually works. I bought the publisher's overstock, and can supply these as long as they last. For anyone who ever has trouble putting words on the page---professional writers, wannabes, and everyone in between, along with grad students who can't get their theses written, execs who get bogged down in corporate reports, lawyers who get stalled writing briefs, and . . .well, you know who you are.

Check out these testimonials from satisfied readers. Click here.

TELLING LIES FOR FUN & PROFIT

The most popular of my writing books, published by Arbor House in 1981. The book's still in print in a $12 trade paperback edition from Morrow Quill, with a new introduction by Sue Grafton, and that's the one to buy if you need a reading copy. But if what you want is the hardcover first edition, well, this is it. I think it's a genuinely scarce book---I rarely see it on dealers' lists, and hardly ever at signings---but I have a pretty good supply, and can offer signed firsts at $60

LB's self-published book version of his interactive writing seminar, published in 1985 and long unobtainable. HarperCollins has published an e-book version at a much lower price, but if you're a collector, this is the one you want; it's arguably the rarest Lawrence Block item and never shows up in the aftermarket. $100 while they last, and only one to a customer, please.

A DANCE AT THE SLAUGHTERHOUSE

We delisted this title when we sold the last of our first editions, but we still have a nice stock of second / third printings. They're signed hardcover copies, distinguishable from the firsts only in that they lack the "1" in the list of numbers on the copyright page. A BURGLAR'S-EYE VIEW OF GREED

This is a 550-word Op-Ed piece written for New York Newsday in 2002, and would remain forever lost to the world (like the now-defunct newspaper itself) but for Mark Lavendier, the small-press publisher who has produced this handsome broadside, illustrated with an Allen Avery woodcut. The piece is 20" x 14" and eminently suitable for framing, just in case you're tired of the Renoir. The limitation is 150 numbered copies, signed by the author and the illustrator; our price is $35 plus shipping, and we ship these flat (duh!) and by Priority Mail in the U.S., air overseas.

THE BURGLAR WHO SMELLED SMOKE.

This Bernie Rhodenbarr short story, by Lynne Wood Block and Lawrence Block, was written for the anthology Till Death Do Us Part, and first published in Mary Higgins Clark's Mystery Magazine, where it appeared as a special pamphlet bound into the magazine. The editors were kind enough to send us the overrun of the pamphlets, and we are now making them available to collectors, signed by both of the co-authors. "Unique" is an overused and often misused word, but it might actually apply here---and the price is only $10.

ARIEL

Set in Charleston, South Carolina, this novel about a spooky adopted child was first published in 1980 by Arbor House. In 1996, G&G Books brought out a limited edition under the imprint of The Lawrence Block Library. The total press run ran to 500 signed and numbered copies, 26 lettered copies, and a dozen A/P author's copies. While it's not the first hardcover edition (the Arbor House book was hardcover) it's nicely printed and bound, and includes an author's afterword written especially for this edition. And, obviously, there aren't too many of them around. I have a fairly good supply of signed and numbered copies at $50.

THE SPECIALISTS

Originally published as a Gold Medal pb in 1969, this book was very deliberately designed to be the first in an action-adventure series. The heroes are five former Green Berets who pull military-style capers in aid of Truth, Justice, and the American Way. I wrote the one book and found out that, though this is a kind of book I like to read, it wasn't one I liked to write. So I pulled the plug on the enterprise, much to the surprise of my agent, who kept saying he thought this was going to be the first of a series. (I finally told him I didn't see any reason why he and I couldn't think of it as a one-book series. I don't know that that made him happy, but it kept him quiet.) The book had a couple of paperback editions, but never appeared in hardcover in the US until 1996, when James Cahill brought it out with art by Phil Parks, along with a new afterword. He had distribution problems, however, and wound up paying me off in copies. I thought I'd own the little darlings forever, but they got such a warm reception on tour that I sold out all I had and wound up buying the publisher's entire remaining stock. The books are in mint condition. The original retail price is $25, and I've seen the book on E-bay for twice that, but we're able to offer them for the original price of $25. And for that price you're not merely getting an autographed copy of a hardcover first edition---you're getting a complete series!

Price: $25

Cinderella Sims
by Subterranean Press

An early pseudonymous novel of mine, titled $20 Lust by the original paperback publisher back in 1961, now with its original title of CINDERELLA SIMS restored for the Subterranean Press hardcover edition. It's a classic noir tale of counterfeiting and love gone wrong. First hardcover edition March 2003. Great cover art by Phil Parks, intro by Ed Gorman and an afterword from me. Autographed copies are $30. Boxed limited edition, signed and numbered, is SOLD OUT.

THE PERFECT MURDER

Not short stories, but a collaborative effort involving Jack Hitt, Peter Lovesey, Sarah Caudwell, Donald E. Westlake, Tony Hillerman, and myself. It was great fun, but I've no idea how it works here, as its trimmed to fit on two cassettes. Different readers for the different sections. You'd have to listen to it to decide whether it's brilliant or a dog's breakfast, and you'll have to do that yourself, as I'm not about to listen to it for you.

KELLER PAPERBACKS

A set of the first three Keller novels to complement the philatelic edition of Hit and Run.  These are signed, and will include a philatelic enhancement; each book will bear the appropriate stamp (1¢, 2¢, or 3¢) from the 1938 Presidential series, each canceled by a special Keller cancellation. Keller had these stamps in his boyhood collection; that's how he learned to name the presidents in order.

EVEN THE WICKED - UK FIRST

This is the true first edition of the book,
having been published in 1996. (The US edition came out in 1997.) The printing
was very small---we've heard numbers ranging from 500 to 1500---and most copies
seem to have gone to provincial libraries, so the book's genuinely rare. We saw
this priced in London as high as £250. We have mint copies, signed by Lawrence
Block.  (We still have some of the Morrow US firsts here.)

THE SPECIALISTS - BOXED LIMITED EDITION

Cahill Press published this non-series title, and we bought out the publisher's stock and have been selling it here ever since for $25. It's a popular item for us. Cahill also published a signed boxed Limited Edition, and we've got copies of that as well, but never got around to offering them. The book is boxed and numbered, with a nice black leather-like library binding, and is a pretty scarce item. These won't be around long at only $50 each!

AFTER HOURS

Back in the mid-nineties I did a book with Ernie Bulow, small-press publisher and Indian trader of Gallup, New Mexico. It consisted of
transcriptions of interviews he did with me, and University of New Mexico Press published it in 1995 with our joint byline. Ernie was not born to interview, nor was I born to be interviewed, and the result is probably a little stiff, but not entirely without interest. UNM Press was thrilled when I was able to tell them the book won the Nevermore award; what I forbore to tell them was that it was given for Worst Cover Art of the Year. Have to say it was well deserved. My photo on the jacket is the worst picture I've ever taken, and that covers a lot of bumpy ground. Ernie took the picture, so that's another career he'd be best advised not to pursue. I rarely see copies of this title, and mine have reposed in warehouse cartons ever since I received them. Time to let them go at

Cumberland Press published two anthologies which LB edited, each including a 20,000-word title novella. ARCs, PROOFS, GALLEYS
Call them what you will, they're the advance look publishers provide for early reviewers, or to build enthusiasm among booksellers, or simply to look as if they're making an effort. I can remember when they were called BOMs, because they were produced primarily for submission to Book-of-the-Month Club, and for nostalgia's sake that's how we're coding them. They were also roundly despised in the aftermarket, and you'd see them on the 25¢ table at the Strand. Then somebody decided they were collectible, and some of them go for more than the book's first edition. I offered a ton of them in an email newsletter a few years ago and you cleaned me out. I guess my prices were too low. Well, these aren't much higher, so maybe you can snag a bargain. Some of these are unadorned old-fashioned bound galleys, while others are quite nicely produced; for all I know, the plain ones are rarer and more valuable. Have fun.

Oh, before I forget. I know an author who refuses to sign galleys. I'm not proud. I'll sign these.

 TRANSLATIONS

LB IN TRANSLATION
I find it particularly gratifying that so many of my books are translated into other languages and published abroad. With the assistance of those unsung heroes, my translators, Matthew Scudder and Bernie Rhodenbarr have had their adventures recounted all over the globe. (And many of those translators are diligent and perceptive indeed, sending me lengthy e-mail queries to decipher the word play and Americanisms that make some of my sentences damn near untranslatable. Robert Pépin's French translations are sprinkled with footnotes that might be useful in the US editions as well, and Toshiko Taguchi, my indefatigable Japanese translator, has at least twice caught me in inconsistencies and errors that sailed right past every American reader, including the copy editors.) I cherish the copies of foreign-language editions I receive---but I don't really need to cherish more than one of each. Accordingly, I have books I'm willing to part with. If you're reading this, you'd probably just as soon read my books in English, so why should you be interested? Well, I've learned not to try to predict what a collector would or would not want to add to a collection; I doubt anyone would attempt to be a completist with foreign editions, but I know some collectors who try to acquire one book per language. Or you might want an autographed copy as a gift for a friend overseas. Or---and this is where some of my copies have gone---you may know someone who lives in the US but who is more comfortable reading books in his/her native language. I've passed on copies of the appropriate editions to a Dominican doorman, a Russian physiotherapist, a Korean greengrocer, and a Chinese restaurateur, all of whom appreciated far beyond their literary merit. The opportunity to read books set here, where they live, but printed in their first language, is evidently to be treasured.

WHAT'S AVAILABLE: For a while now the best we could do was offer you a choice by language, with the titles unspecified. That's a little too pig-in-a-poke, so we're doing things differently now, listing individual titles. . .and cutting the price while we're at it, to a uniform $5 per book. Most books will be paperbacks, and all will be signed. We'll be adding titles and languages all the time, and deleting the ones that have sold out; we have at best a handful of a title, and sometimes only a single copy, so you might want to list alternates. Because our shipping charge is per book, it can add up when you buy a lot of books; we recognize the inequity of this, and will give you a break on shipping charges on large orders.

LB READING COPIES

Most of my books are pretty widely available, but sometimes a title may be hard to find. If you're just looking for a copy to read, and you can't find it elsewhere, we may have it here in this section, and at a flat $5 bargain price. The edition we ship depends on what we've got on hand---sometimes a hurt hardcover copy, sometimes a large-format UK paperback, sometimes a US mass-market paperback. As usual, all books come autographed.
